The Secret to Teaching Gratitude During the Holidays

Have you ever noticed that the more we get, the less we tend to appreciate? It’s true for children and adults alike. A child working through a pile of presents at his birthday party will often open one and fling it to the floor with hardly a glance in the rush to open yet another. Christmas offers a similar challenge. At family gatherings and on Christmas morning, there are countless gifts to be opened. We enjoy decadent meals and a constant parade of desserts. How can parents teach gratitude in the middle of holiday excess?

This is the season of hope, and we have some to offer! From your own gift-giving plan to the way you choose to share moments of giving and receiving with friends and family, try these 5 strategies for teaching gratitude during the holidays.

1Be intentional about changing the focus.

Trust us, this won’t happen on its own because there are billions of advertising dollars spent to ensure that the focus stays right where it traditionally is—in your retailer’s pocket. So be proactive

about using different language to talk about Christmas this year. For example: When you mention a “Christmas list” to your kids, do they think about things they want to receive or things they want to give? Training your family to think first about the opportunity to give and to serve can change the feel of your whole holiday experience.

Serve.

I almost hesitate to write this because I personally lament the fact that we’re all moved to serve the less fortunate at Christmas time and seldom think of them during the rest of the year. (I’m pretty sure people are hungry and cold in March too.) But having said that, we can’t escape the fact that some charity and service is better than none at all.

Rein Santa Claus in a little.

I'm not anti-Santa. He was a big deal growing up. My dad would even take one of his mounted deer off the wall, stick a red ball on its nose, and have it peer into our windows late on Christmas Eve! It was terrifying magical! But when the jolly old elf is the first, most consistent element of the Christmas celebration your child comes to know, it’s a short hop from there to “what do I get?”

And listen up, moms. Just because Santa is making a stop at your house doesn’t mean he has to bring a stack of 50 things for each child. Less is more. Because we’re Christians, my husband and I decided when our children were small to allow Santa to bring each child three gifts. Our explanation was that “Santa brings three gifts to children

While some families enjoy the chaotic, paper-flying frenzy of every child opening gifts simultaneously, my sister-in-law brought a better, more civilized approach to our family celebrations. Gifts are distributed to the recipients, but we go around the room opening one at a time. This allows everyone to admire the gift and gives the recipient the time to truly appreciate the gift and to thank the giver. It gives gratitude and good manners a fighting chance, and it allows you the opportunity to savor the moment of generosity among your loved ones! If you want extra credit, you can even help your children write thank you notes to friends and relatives for the things they received.

Create more Christmas experiences outside of gift-giving.

Watch a few favorite Christmas movies, bake together, read a classic Christmas story, or take a drive to see the best holiday lights. There are lots of options. Help your children to build Christmas memories that don’t come wrapped in paper and tied with a bow. Help your

Help your family find ways to focus on making the holidays better for others: Serve dinner at a nonprofit event or shelter, buy gifts for a needy child or family through a nonprofit program such as Operation Christmas Child or Salvation Army, or visit a local nursing home to spend time with seniors who long for company. It’s simple math: The more time you spend thinking about others, the less time you have to think about yourself.

he holiday season is a time for joy and togetherness, but it can often bring stress for parents of young children with the amount of “newness” in each experience, particularly when it comes to seasonal travel.

To help make holiday travel with little ones more manageable – whether traveling by bus, train, car or plane – Dr. Whitney Casares, MD, MPH, pediatric medical consultant for Gerber, offers this guidance for families.

Travel Light

Especially if traveling by plane, pack as light as possible (or check most of your luggage) so you have less to maneuver through security gates and on the plane. However, for longer trips, packing small, developmentally appropriate toys and snacks can provide perfect entertainment for little ones.

Prepare for Ear Pressure

Babies often scream during takeoff and landing on flights because they can’t easily equalize the pressure in their eustachian tubes, the connection between their ears and the back of the throat. When you’re ascending and

descending, give your baby something safe to suck on, like a pacifier, to reduce the buildup of pressure in the ears. Taking small sips of water, breastmilk or formula and yawning are also ways to help babies and toddlers experiencing ear pressure during flights.

Plan for Time Adjustments

For long trips that include time zone changes, expect children to take several days to grow accustomed to their new schedules. Plan an extra day or two for that time adjustment, if possible, when mapping out your trip and make time for stops to stretch, snack and take bathroom breaks.

Pack Convenient Snacks

Having easy-to-access snacks that don’t make a large mess can make travel easier and less stressful. Find Gerber nutritious snacks for toddlers that come in resealable containers that are easy to pack for on-the-go families.

Bring Sanitizing Products

Having your own sanitizing wipes onhand makes it easier to freshen up oftentouched surfaces in public spaces like seatback trays, chairs and tables. While

safe on most hard surfaces, check the label before using the wipes then allow the area to dry completely before letting your child touch it. Warm, soapy water can also be used to clean toys and other personal products.

Maintain a Consistent Schedule

Keeping your child on his or her normal schedule during the holidays isn’t always feasible and a few imperfections are to be expected during the busy season. However, if your baby’s feeding or sleep schedule does get thrown off by holiday events, try to return to a consistent routine as soon as possible. Be patient with yourself and your little one as you both adjust.

Be Mindful of Anxiety

While attending holiday gatherings, your child may become overwhelmed when meeting new people, including family members. Babies start to develop separation anxiety and apprehension to strangers at about 6 months old as their brains start to understand the concept of object permanence (that something still exists when it is not present). Educating loved ones about this developmental stage can help you feel less anxious about big family gatherings with your little one. If your child is particularly sensitive, try introducing new people in smaller cohorts, as opposed to introducing him or her to the whole group at once.

Take Time for Yourself

While traveling with little ones can be a “bumpy road,” it’s important for parents to also try and enjoy the holidays as much as possible. Making some time for yourself – taking deep breaths, listening to a meditation app or playing a favorite song, for example – can help you recharge and relax ahead of a big event.

10 Ways to Get Your Kids to Stop Lying

Have you ever given your kids the fresh breath test? If you have a child who tends to lie, you probably have! It works like this: You ask: “Did you brush your teeth?” Your child answers, “Yes.” “Okay,” you say, “let me smell your breath.” It’s pretty obvious if your child hasn’t brushed his teeth. Once you’ve found out your child isn’t telling the truth, you can start taking the steps to stop the lying.

Honesty is the basis for any relationship because it develops trust and, upon that foundation, simple things like communication and responsibility rest. When a child lies, that trust is broken and relationships suffer. Parents often don’t know how to handle dishonesty and common discipline techniques don’t quite address the problem. A more comprehensive plan is usually necessary since dishonesty often has several components. Here are 10 ways to get your child to stop lying.

Talk about reality and truth

Talk about how reality and truth are

different from fantasy, wishes, possibility, pretend, and make believe. Require that children use cues to identify anything other than reality. Here are some ideas: “I think it happened this way.” “I think this is the answer.” “I’m not sure…” “Maybe…” (possibility) “I wish this were true.” “I’d like it if…” (wish) “I’d like to tell you a story…” “I can imagine what it would be like to…” (fantasy)

how to stop. This impulsivity component can lead to dishonesty because of a lack of self-control. It’s not always malicious lying, but it’s still not good and shouldn’t be excused because the problem often gets worse. Even though children may have poor impulse control, they must learn to tell the truth. The route, though, may contain more self-discipline training than some of the other suggestions.

When you sense a child is beginning to stray from the truth, stop them. “I want you to stop talking for a minute.” Sometimes children just get started and can’t stop. Parents can help teach them. “Think for a minute and then start again. I’d like to hear the things you know separated from the things you think.” “Start again and tell me how it really happened. Just the parts you are sure of.”

If a child has ADHD or is impulsive, use a plan for self-discipline. Sometimes children who are impulsive blurt out things without thinking. Other times they start talking and don’t know

A courtesy generally given in relationships is called the benefit of the doubt.

When a child has developed a pattern of lying, we don’t automatically give that courtesy. Believing someone requires trust and it’s a privilege which is earned. Privilege and responsibility go together and when a child is irresponsible then privileges are taken away. For a time, the things your child says are suspect. You may even question something that is found to be true later. A child may be hurt by this, but that hurt is the natural consequence of mistrust which in turn comes from lying. Being believed is a privilege earned when children are responsible in telling the truth on a regular basis. Not believing your child may seem mean, but your child must learn that people who don’t tell the truth can’t be trusted. Tell your child that you would like to believe him or her but you cannot until he or she earns that privilege.

Some situations won’t be clear and some children will deliberately lie to avoid punishment.

You find yourself in a predicament because proof seems impossible, yet you have a sense that this child is not telling the truth. When possible, don’t choose that battleground. It’s too sticky and you will usually have other clearer opportunities later. Children who have a problem with lying,

demonstrate it often. Choose clearer battles and use those situations to discipline firmly. Use taking a break and the positive conclusion and maybe other consequences if necessary.

Confrontation should result in repentance. This may seem unrealistic at first but keep it in mind as your goal. Children who are confronted with the fact that they are telling a lie should immediately agree and apologize. A child who is defensive is relying on arguing and justifying as manipulative techniques in order to avoid taking responsibility. This is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. Use Taking a Break to motivate the child to repentance.

Be proactive in teaching about honesty. Tell stories from your life or read stories like:

You may withhold further discipline if a child responds properly to correction. You may, for an introductory period of time, in order to motivate repentance when confronted, withhold further discipline if a child responds properly to correction. “If you can admit it was a lie and that you were wrong when I confront you, I will not further discipline you for that lie.” This is a temporary approach to teach a proper response to correction. 8

Give an outlet for creative writing or storytelling.

In order to further emphasize the difference between fantasy and reality and the proper use of fantasy. 10

Memorizing proverbs dealing with honesty is a way to appeal to a child’s conscience. These suggestions will go a long way toward helping a child tell the truth. Don’t let this problem go. It only gets worse. Continual, persistent work will pay off in the end. k

Gingerbread Cookies

his ultimate holiday classic is the perfect way to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year. This ginger bread cookies recipe has the perfect combination of ginger and molasses flavors, without being overpowering. These favorite gingerbread cookies are tasty and perfect canvases for decorating, making them irresistible to holiday guests. These homemade cookies are also a breeze to decorate with royal icing, sprinkles, and any other decorations of your choosing.

Amount: 2 dozen

Skill Level: Beginner

Ingredients

• 3 cups all-purpose flour

• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 1 teaspoon ground ginger

• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

• 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

• 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

• 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening

• 1/2 cup granulated sugar

• 3/4 cup molasses

• 1 egg

• Royal icing (optional)

Royal Icing with Meringue Powder

• Rolling pin

• Cookie cutters

• Baking sheet

• Cooling rack

Instructions

1 Preheat the oven to 375°F.

2 In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt and spices (ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground cloves).

3 In a large saucepan, melt the shortening and cool slightly. Stir in sugar, molasses and egg and mix well. Add 2 cups flour mixture and mix well.

4 Turn the mixture onto a lightly floured surface and knead in the remaining dry ingredients by hand. Add additional flour, if necessary, to make firm dough.

5 Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters of your choice and cut out cookies from the dough.

6 Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet until lightly browned on edges for about 10-15 minutes. Cool on a cookie sheet placed on a cooling grid for 3 minutes. Remove from the cookie sheet and cool completely on the wire rack.

Kiddo-Ween Party at CityPlace Doral

Hundreds of families with children visited CityPlace Doral Fountain Plaza on Saturday, October 29th, to celebrate the fifth Annual Kiddo-Ween Party, an event organized by Kiddos Magazine in partnership with CityPlace Doral.
